How to Compare Medicare Part D Plans for GLP-1 Coverage
Choosing a Medicare Part D plan that covers GLP-1 medications like Wegovy® or Zepbound® can mean the difference between manageable costs and a surprise pharmacy bill. The Medicare.gov Plan Finder is the best free tool for comparing plans side by side.
This guide walks through the exact steps to enter your medications, compare formularies, and estimate your total out-of-pocket costs for the year.
Not every Part D plan covers the same GLP-1 medications, and out-of-pocket costs can vary by hundreds or thousands of dollars per year. Comparing plans before Open Enrollment is the only way to know you are choosing the lowest-cost option for the drugs you actually take.
How to use the Medicare Plan Finder for GLP-1s.
Go to Medicare.gov Plan Finder
Start at medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Enter your ZIP code and confirm whether you have Original Medicare with a separate Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
Add your exact GLP-1 medications
Search for the exact drug name and dosage. For example, Wegovy 1.7 mg/0.75 mL injectable pen, or Zepbound 5 mg/0.5 mL. Adding the wrong strength will give you the wrong cost estimate, so check your prescription label if you are unsure.
Add any other prescriptions
Include the rest of your medication list. Plans price drugs as a package, so a plan that looks cheap for one medication may be expensive overall if your other drugs are on higher tiers.
Select your preferred pharmacies
Choose the pharmacies you are most likely to use. Some plans negotiate much better prices at preferred pharmacies, and the difference can be substantial for GLP-1 medications.
Compare estimated annual costs
The Plan Finder shows a single estimated annual cost for each plan, combining premiums, deductibles, and drug costs. Click into each plan to see whether the GLP-1 is covered, what tier it is on, and whether prior authorization or step therapy is required.
Six numbers that affect your GLP-1 costs.
Monthly premium
Higher-premium plans are not always more expensive overall. Compare the total annual estimate instead.
Annual deductible
Some plans have no deductible for Tier 1 and 2 drugs but still apply a deductible to higher tiers, including GLP-1s.
Drug tier
GLP-1s are usually Tier 3, 4, or 5 specialty drugs. Lower tiers mean lower copays or coinsurance.
Coverage rules
Look for prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. These can delay or block a prescription even if the drug is listed.
Preferred pharmacy pricing
A plan may have a low monthly premium but much higher GLP-1 costs at non-preferred pharmacies.
Mail-order options
Some plans offer 90-day supplies through mail order at a lower cost per month.
Remember: the 2026 Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a separate pathway from Part D.
For chronic weight management, eligible Medicare beneficiaries may be able to get Wegovy or Zepbound for a flat $50 per month through the federal Bridge Program starting July 1, 2026. This is different from standard Part D coverage, which excludes weight-loss GLP-1s. At your consultation, we can help you compare both pathways.
