Which oral GLP-1 medication is right for you?
Both Oral Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Foundayo™ (orforglipron) are FDA-approved once-daily medications for chronic weight management. Both can be effective, but they work differently and have important differences in how they’re taken.
Here’s what patients should know before deciding which option may be right for them.
The biggest difference is convenience. Oral Wegovy requires a structured morning routine — empty stomach, small amount of water, and a 30-minute wait before food or other medications. Foundayo can be taken anytime, with or without food, and without fasting. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, tolerance, and coverage.

Same goal, different routines.
Oral Wegovy
Oral Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active medication used in injectable Wegovy. Because it is a peptide medication, absorption requires a very specific routine:
- •Take first thing in the morning
- •Empty stomach
- •Small amount of water
- •Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications
For many patients this routine becomes second nature. Others find it difficult if they take several morning medications or have an irregular schedule.
Foundayo
Foundayo contains orforglipron, a newer non-peptide GLP-1 medication. Its biggest advantage is convenience.
It can be taken:
- •with or without food
- •at any time of day
- •without fasting
- •without special water restrictions
That flexibility may make adherence easier for some patients.
Both produce meaningful results.
Both medications produce meaningful weight loss when combined with nutrition and physical activity.
Although the two drugs have not been compared head-to-head in a single clinical trial, each has demonstrated substantial weight loss in its own studies. Differences in study design make direct comparisons difficult, so choosing one over the other should not be based solely on average percentage weight loss.
Both share similar side effects.
Both medications share similar potential side effects, including:
- •nausea
- •vomiting
- •diarrhea
- •constipation
- •decreased appetite
Most side effects occur during dose escalation and improve with time.
The best medication is often the one that you tolerate well and can take consistently.
